Ahead of Onam, cops seize over 32kg ganja
Two men acting as local agents arrested
Kochi: Over 32 kilo ganja, worth nearly Rs 2 lakh, shipped into the city from outside the state via trains were seized in separate incidents with the cops suspecting them to be part of consignments being brought in by the mafia for sale during the upcoming festive season.
Two men, who were acting as local agents, were arrested in this connection. In the first instance, a total of 10.25 kilo ganja was seized from the Edapally railway station premises on Tuesday night. Idukki native Manoj Thomas (43) and Jijo John (28), hailing from Kottayam, were arrested.
“They were acting as local distributors and we recovered the ganja concealed in a plastic carry bag from them. The substance was brought from Vishakapatnam by train by an inter-state racket and handed over to the duo. A further probe is underway about the racket,” Kalamassery CI C J Martin said.
The cops have got information about “ganja flow” into the city with the Onam festive season round the corner. “The mafia mainly targets youths and migrant labourers. We will intensify action to prevent the flow of narcotics in the coming days,” he said.
Meanwhile, 22 kilo ganja was recovered from the South railway station early Wednesday. “We seized the substance from two bags found abandoned at Platform no 1 around 5 am. However, no one has been arrested so far. Further probe is on including scanning the CCTV images to nab the luggage owners,” railway police said.
The cops are probing whether both the cases have any connection. “The ganja is believed to be brought from Andhra and Orissa borders. Webelieve it to be part of a bigger consignment,” they said.
