KCR seeks inputs from businessmen on labour law
A CEO of a top Indian company felt that states should be given more freedom
Hyderabad: With the competition for investments intensifying between states, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Wednesday struck all right chords to play out a symphony for captains of Indian industry. Be it the aversion for unionism, or liking for faster clearances or the push for easy land acquisition, Mr Rao appears to have convinced businessmen that he is the person to do business with.
“Recently, we had a strike at GHMC. Though we had dealt with it firmly, I know the dangers of erratic unionism. We know how it (erratic unionism) has ruined Kolkata. So I wanted to get your inputs on what kind of labour laws that the industry wants us to enact,” said Mr Rao, during an interactive session with the members of CII national council.
Though CII president Sumit Mazumder preempted an open discussion on Telangana’s future labour law by saying that CII’s panel on labour laws would meet him, the Chief Minister’s query floored the businessmen.
This is evident from the post-event discussion among key businessmen heard on the sidelines. While talking to each other, businessmen were seen to be happy with states competing with each other to get new investments.
A CEO of a top Indian company felt that states should be given more freedom. While the others felt that states can’t do much unless some difficult Cen-tral laws are amended.
Answering a query from a delegate on the land acquisition Bill, Mr Rao said that it is always better to let states make their own laws. “So we have asked the Central government to allow us to enact our law. An annoucement is expected soon.”
In reply to Godrej & Boyce chairman Jamshyd Godrej’s suggestion to emulate Singapore’s model of according all clearances at the industrial park level, Mr Rao said that Telangana’s industrial policy is better than that of Singapore’s.
