Tension simmers in Neyveli over strike
LPF leader dismissed as stir enters 23rd day
Neyveli: Tension prevails in Neyveli following the NLC management’s decision to dismiss LPF leader Thirumavalavan from service for acting against the company’s rules. However, the dismissal order was withheld following the trade union’s talk with the management.
The action on the LPF leader came in the wake of the indefinite strike by NLC employees demanding wage revision which entered 22nd day on Tuesday.
The management had taken action against Thirumavalavan for inciting contract workers to go on strike in 2013. Thirumavalavan who is also honorary president of the NLC contract workers union, was given a show cause notice 15 days ago asking why action should not be taken against him. Protesting the management’s action, members of Joint Action Council of Trade unions held a protest outside the gate of mine I.
LPF general secretary S. Rajavanniyan said the management had also issued similar show cause notice to office-bearers of other trade unions too. “They have asked why action should not be taken against them as they faced contempt of court for continuing the strike,” he said.
M KARUNANIDHI WANTS CENTRE, STATE TO INTERVENE IMMEDIATELY
Meanwhile, DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday urged the Central and state governments to intervene and bring to an end the strike by NLC employees. “It is painful that even after the strike called by the workers crossing 20 days, the Central and state governments have not given its due importance. If the issue is considered as a Central Government’s problem, those who will be affected are the workers hailing from Tamil Nadu and its people. Therefore, without any further delay, the Central and State governments should come forward and settle the issue,” he said.
Karunanidhi said the labour unrest in NLC was not mentioned in the memorandum submitted by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the city.
