Hyderabad: An Intermediate student died and her friend suffered severe injuries when a speeding van hit them in a freak mishap while they were crossing the road in Katedan under Mailardevpally police station limits.
Police said Mamta Chouhan, 16, and Ch Harika, 19, students of Gowtam Junior College at Shamshabad, were crossing the road at about 5.30 pm.
They crossed the divider and waited for a truck to pass. The truck hit them and they fell on the other side of the divider.
A van that was passing by ran over them, Mailardevpally police said. Mamata died on the spot, while Harika suffered severe injuries and was shifted to the Osmania General Hospital for treatment. Police registered a case and is looking for the van driver who fled from the spot.
Mamta was a resident of TNGOs Colony and Harika is a resident of Katedan.
