CPM wall respects traffic
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPM general secretary Mr Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday said that the opposition will continue Parliament boycott till tainted ministers at the Centre and states are thrown out even as thousands of party workers and sympathisers lined up on the highways to raise 1000 km long wall of protest .
The CPM had gone for massive mobilisation this time in the wake of criticism that its agitations were either fizzling out or having little impact. Politburo member M A Baby acknowledged the criticism against party while taking part in protest at Ernakulam.
CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the party had taken extra care to ensure its agitation caused minimum inconvenience to public.
Since the party has often been accused of violent protests and disrupting normal life, the workers had been directed to assemble on the roadsides to without disturbing traffic.
Yechury who inaugurated the protest wall at Raj Bhavan, accused BJP Government of shielding corrupt. “It is not because of the Left parties that the Parliament is not functioning but because of government's refusal to accept the reasonable demands of the opposition,” he said.
On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claim on corruption free government, the CPM general secretary quipped; “We told Modi not to make tall claims about corruption free government in just one year. We reminded him that all big scams of the previous government including 2G surfaced after four years hence there was still time.”
Mr Yechury said the prices of agriculture produce and cash crops had dropped drastically while farmer suicides had gone up by 26 per cent during Modi’s one year rule. He said public distribution system was being systematically destroyed to help corporate lobbies.
He accused BJP and RSS of polarising the country on religious lines for electoral gains. “There is a concerted attempt to push hardcore and intolerant Hindutva agenda” he added.
CPM politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan and state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishan criticised government move to defer local bodies’ poll. The government will face intense agitation if it decides to postpone the polls, they warned.
