Chennai Corporation to reconstruct fruit, flower shop
The complex had to be demolished to make way for an approach road to the bridge
Chennai: Two and a half years after the completion of Thiru Vi Ka bridge in Adyar, the Chennai corporation will now be reconstructing a fruit and a flower shop complex on Durgabai Deshmukh Road that had to be demolished for constructing the bridge. Officials said that tenders have already been floated and pegged the cost of the project at Rs 32.4 lakh. However, a public convenience structure which also had to be demolished, is not included in the reconstruction package.
The complex had to be demolished to make way for an approach road to the bridge. The State Highways department began construction of the Rs 13 crore three lane bridge on the Adyar river in 2010. The department had also handed out a compensation package of around Rs 30 lakh to the Chennai corporation back then. The complex used to house hawkers who were earlier occupying space near bus stops in Adyar. They were moved into the shops constructed by the Corporation around 15 years ago. However, after demolition of the complex, hawkers began occupying the footpath and subsequently encroachments popped up all along the sidewalk.
Pedestrians complain of inconvenience due to the presence of the hawkers. “I am forced to walk facing onrushing traffic. MTC buses approach the bus stops at great speed,” said S Ramamurthy, a passer-by.
