Chennai: Laptop stealing gang arrested

Gang from Vellore targets techies staying in bachelor accomodations
Chennai: CCTV images have helped cops nail down a five-member gang from Vellore who went on a laptop stealing spree targeting techies staying in bachelor accommodations along the IT corridor near Thoraipakkam.
Sixty-three laptops were secured from them. Police kept a special eye on a red Yamaha R15 bike after the image of two youths on the bike cropped up in more than enough grabs acquired after the crime was reported. A team led by Kannagi Nagar crime inspector, Ravindran, intercepted the duo — Prabhu (23) and Karthik (23) — on Monday night riding a Yamaha R15 and during checks they found them to be in possession of a crowbar.
“Prabhu, a BA graduate, is an aspiring actor and his friend Karthik is an ITI Passout. Both of them are from well to do families and confessed to their role in the thefts after interrogation,” an investigating officer said.
The duo led the cops to the other members of the gang, Babu (21), a BBA student and Rahul (22), an engineering graduate and Prashanth (23).
During interrogations, they disclosed their modus operandi and said they did it for the easy money.
“They would identify techies staying together in and around Thoraipakkam and would target their houses. Most of the victims made their jobs easy by leaving the keys inside shoes, in flower pots and behind windows,” the officer said.
On places where their task was not made easy, they used the crowbar, police said. “The boys usually sold the laptops at electronic stores for Rs 10,000-12,000 and shared the booty to go on weekend trips to Pondy,” a senior police officer said.
