Vijayakanth to observe fast

Senior DMDK leader said that there was no flip flop in the party’s stand on prohibition
Chennai: A day after seeking implementation of total prohibition in a phased manner, DMDK on Monday announced that its members would observe a day’s fast, led by its chief Vijayakanth, at its headquarters in Koyambedu, to highlight the demand.
“DMDK wants to make the state free of liquor. For that we have to implement total prohibition. People of the state are also in favour of it,” the party statement here said.
To press the demand, Vijayakanth would preside over a fast. Vijayakanth along with his party cadres were arrested on August 6 when they held a human chain protest without the police permission. Interestingly, DMDK has in its executive committee meeting on Sunday called for implementation of prohibition in a phased manner.
“Though enforcement of total prohibition was impractical, the state should set an example for others by implementing it in a phased manner,” the resolution adopted at the meeting said.
However, a senior DMDK leader said that there was no flip flop in the party’s stand on prohibition. “We are in favour of total prohibition. It cannot be done in a day. It should be implemented in a phased manner for which the government should come out with a policy framework,” he explained.
