Porn ban: We can't do moral policing, Centre tells Supreme Court
‘Government can’t regulate what people are doing in their bedrooms’ - Attorney General
New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government on Monday informed the Supreme Court that though it was committed to banning child porn sites, it can’t ban adult porn sites as it does not want to intrude into citizens’ private spaces and conduct moral policing.
Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told a bench of Chief Justice H.L. Dattu and Justices Arun Mishra and Amitav Roy, hearing petitions seeking a ban on porn sites, “you can’t become a totalitarian state and ban all porn sites as it would violate the right to information or right to entertainment.”
He said, “The Centre can’t turn to moral policing and the government can’t regulate what people are doing in their bedrooms.” The AG said the government will sort out the issue with ISPs.
