No petrol for helmetless riders in Malappuram

Petrol pump operators have been asked to prominently display the notice and alert motorists

KOZHIKODE: The Malappuram police have launched a drive to prevent helmetless travel and triple-riding on two-wheelers.

They have issued an advisory to all petrol pumps in the district asking them not to sell petrol to helmetless bike riders and triple riders.

Malappuram SP Debesh Kumar Behera issued this advisory under section 60 of the Kerala Police Act which enables the police to carry out awareness drives to ensure the safety of the motorists.

The petrol pump owners, who were confused about the order, held a meeting with the SP to clarify their doubt.

“Now they have all agreed to cooperate with the initiative. So we have sent the notices to all petrol pumps in the district,” Mr Abdul Khader, DySP Special Branch told Deccan Chronicle.

The district police have also kickstarted an awareness campaign for the two-wheeler riders about the advisory sent to petrol pumps.

The petrol pump operators have been asked to prominently display a notice alerting the motorists about this.

Police sources said the measure would help people realise the importance of wearing helmets and reduce the trouble for the motorists and the police.
