Chennai: Maid at Anbumani’s house ends life

Phone records reveal that her cousin called her about 20 times on Sunday night
Chennai: A 19-year-old domestic help working at PMK leader Dr Anbumani Ramadoss’ residence committed suicide by hanging at the politician’s house on Tilak street, T.Nagar, on Monday.
Preliminary investigations revealed that she last had an argument with her mother over her impending marriage and police suspect it may have led her to take the extreme step.
K. Malini, a native of Nagavedu village in Arakkonam, about 80 km from Chennai, was found hanging using her duppatta at her first floor quarters around 8 am by her co-worker Mani. Police sources said that Mani checked on her as she did not turn up for work on Monday morning at her usual time and the room was locked from inside prompting him to check into the room through the window.
Mani alerted driver Babu and later informed others in the house. Pondy Bazaar police rushed to the scene on information and moved her body to Government Royapettah Hospital (GRH) for postmortem and her family members were informed.
“Malini’s co-workers found her hanging and informed us. I was not aware of any issues, which she was going through. All I have learnt as of now is that she returned to work after having an argument with her mother,” Anbumani Ramadoss told DC.
According to Pondy Bazaar inspector G. Venkatesan, “The girl left to her native on Thursday to attend a temple function and reported back to work around 4.30 pm on Sunday. She has been working at Anbumani’s house for the last 11 months and was referred by a party member.” Police sources said the girl’s mother, Pattu, had reportedly asked her to postpone her marriage with her cousin, Meganathan, a lorry driver working in Bengaluru. “We have interrogated her mother and have also summoned Meganathan for an enquiry. Phone records reveal that he called her about 20 times on Sunday night,” a senior police officer said. Pondy Bazaar police registered a case under section 174 of CrPC (unnatural death) and are investigating.
