Generation in two 500 MW units of Vallur thermal plant suspended
Coal conveyor belt snapped in Vallur thermal power station
Chennai: The snapping of a coal conveyor belt in Vallur thermal power station has halted generation in two 500 MW units on Monday. As the conveyor feeding the boilers snapped, generation in Unit I and III were suspended. Works are on to restore the conveyor by tonight or on Tuesday, said a senior official of Vallur plant. Unit II which was under annual maintenance from June 26 commenced generation from Sunday night.
From the three units in Vallur with a total generation capacity of 1,500 MW, the state would receive its share of 1,078 MW. Due to suspension of generation, the state would receive only 359 MW as its share.
However, a senior Tangedco official said that sudden outage in two units would not affect the State’s power position as it was getting good supply of wind power. “Since it is raining in parts of the State, the power demand is less. Besides, we are receiving good amount of wind energy. We will be able manage without the generation from two units,” the official said.
