Chennai corporates, banks come up short on promises

MHRD statistics lists only 12 corporates as having got approval to construct a pan-India total of 3,466 toilets
Chennai: The contribution of corporate firms to construct toilets under the Swachh Vidyalaya project seem to be minimal.
When Modi made the announcement calling upon the big league firms to invest in the project via CSR, many companies came forward to pledge huge sums of money. Big name MNCs reportedly even pledged up to Rs 100 crore as contribution from their side.
However, MHRD statistics lists only 12 corporates as having got approval to construct a pan-India total of 3,466 toilets.
In the case of TN, officials said only recently Titan Company Limited and Ashok Leyland had come forward with proposals to construct toilets. “Titan will be taking up the work in 37 schools in Hosur town of Krishangiri district,” an official said.
With respect to PSUs, as many as 66 of them are listed as participants with an aim to complete 1,41,597 toilets. As on Monday, 1,28,518 were shown to be completed. Major contributions have come from Coal India Limited, which is building 51,115 toilets followed by the National Thermal Power Corporation with as many as 24,630.
Only State Bank of India, among leading banks, have contributed anything of note but even its pledge to construct 235 toilets is dwarfed by the contributions of a few other PSUs. “In Tamil Nadu, Neyveli Lignite Corporation is constructing 1400 units while NTPC has chipped in with another 100,” an official said.
