A glass of milk at bedtime can make your child’s teeth rot

High levels of sugar in fruits and milk are just as harmful as junk food

Many health-conscious parents ensure that their children stay fit by keeping calorie-laden junk foods off the fridge and including fruits, juices and milk in their diet. But does that always work? Mum-of-two, Angela Debley, was shocked to find out that her one of her children developed two tooth cavities in just six months after a visit to the dentist. The reason will make you question everything you believe about healthy eating habits.

Her children’s dentist, Dr Nathwani, explains that even seemingly healthy food options like honey, granola bars and even fruit juices may contain high amounts of sugar, the Daily Mail reports. This forced Debley to take a closer look at the labels of granola bars to find out that they were indeed packed with more sugar than a chocolate bar. What was surprising was that even the bedtime ritual of drinking milk, widely considered to be a healthy practice, was one of the reasons her son’s teeth were so damaged.

“While milk during the day is fine, the lactose in it is a type of sugar and can be harmful at night, as when we are asleep we produce less of the saliva that would neutralise it,” says Dr Nathwani as quoted by the Daily Mail. So now you know that you shouldn't give your kids milk after they have already brushed their teeth at night.
