No end in sight: Four more farmers end lives over debt

The suicide spree is showing no signs of abating
KALABURAGI: Four more farmers killed themselves in various parts of the state on Sunday with the suicide spree showing no signs of abating. A farmer, Shankar Maindargi, 69, committed suicide owing to the debt burden at Sarsamba village in Aland taluk, Kalaburagi. He had taken a loan of Rs 1.50 lakh from the local branch of Krishna Grameena bank besides borrowing Rs 3 lakhs from private lenders. He is survived by his wife and two children and owned seven acres of land.
Worried over repayment of loans in view of the drought situation, a farmer from Hasamkal village near Maski in Sindhanur taluk committed suicide by hanging. The deceased farmer, Pampapathi Gunjalli, 45, had taken an unspecified loan from the Gudur branch of Vyavasahaya Seva Kendra besides some private lenders. He owned four acres of land.
In Hassan, Basavaraj, a resident of Kallashettihalli of Belur taluk allegedly committed suicide by hanging in his field due to pressure to repay loans. He owned four acres of land and cultivated maize. He had borrowed loans to drill borewells but could not get water to his fields owing to depletion in the groundwater level.
A 45-year-old farmer in Siddapura village in Srirangpatna taluk, reportedly committed suicide by hanging on Sunday. He had gone missing on August 6. His body was found in a decomposed state in a forest area near Siddapura on Sunday. Channegowda, the deceased, had reportedly borrowed Rs 60,000 loan from private money lenders.
