Watch: Rare white whale spotted off Australian coast
This could be the famous humpback Migaloo
Whale watchers were thrilled to catch a glimpse of a rare white humpback whale off the coast of Queensland on Monday. Many of them are hopeful that it could be Australia’s famous whale Migaloo. The name Migaloo meaning “white fella” was given to the whale by aboriginal elders. It is one of the few white whales that have been seen swimming in Australian waters.
This would be the first sighting Migaloo since his migration up the east coast of Australia last year, if reports are confirmed. First spotted way back in 1991, off Byron Bay, he attracted a lot of media attention as he was the world’s first known white humpback, according to Queensland’s Department of Environment and Heritage Protection.
Migaloo has been become so popular over the years that there is even a Twitter account that raises awareness about his migration patterns.
