Rahul Dravid told Greg Chappell he can't drop Sourav Ganguly, says Amitabh Choudhary

Mumbai: The Greg Chappell era was a dark period in Indian cricket especially when former India captain Sourav Ganguly and Chappell broke out in Zimbabwe. Ten years since the incident first surfaced, owing to which Ganguly had to lose his place in the Indian team, memories are still fresh.

BCCI joint secretary Amitabh Choudhary, who was the team manager during that tour went back in time to describe Ganguly's reaction once the mattered was conveyed to the then Indian captain.

"It happened at a training session two days before the first Test (in Bulawayo). The skipper left training midway and returned to the empty dressing room. He came back and threw himself on to a chair, visibly disgusted,” Choudhary was quoted, according to a report in ‘The Times of India’.

"I asked him what happened. Pointing at Chappell, who was on the ground overseeing the net session, Ganguly said, 'That guy's crazy.' Then he told what Chappell had just said," Choudhary revealed in his speech at Xavier Institute of Social Service.

Choudhary also went on to add: "I instantly understood what had just happened was explosive," the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) president added.

"So after pacifying Ganguly, I had a chat with his deputy Rahul Dravid. Then we walked up to the coach to tell him that dropping the skipper was beyond his jurisdiction," Choudhary concluded.
