Tiruchy second in Swachh Bharat rankings
Capital city Chennai finished in the 61st place
Chennai: It was a disaster for Chennai, when the Press Information Bureau on Saturday released the names of cities surveyed for Swachh Bharat, the Clean India drive promoted by Prime minister Narendra Modi. However it was Tiruchy that saved the face of Tamil Nadu by bagging the second position losing the first place to Mysuru in a close contest for 476 cities.
Though the capital city Chennai finished in the 61st place, Madurai and Puducherry fared better with 20 and 23 as their positions. In Tamil Nadu 29 cities were surveyed.

Capital city Chennai finished in the 61st place in Swachh Bharat rankings. Madurai and Puducherry faired better by bagging 20 and 23 places. In Tamil Nadu 29 cities were surveyed. The top 10 ranked cities were Mysore, Tiruchy (Tamil Nadu), Navi Mumbai, Kochi (Kerala), Hassan, Mandya and Bengaluru from Karnataka, Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), Halisahar (West Bengal) and Gangtok (Sikkim).
All the 476 Class-1 cities in 31 states and union territories, each with a population of above one lakh were surveyed for assessing total sanitation practices covering a set of parameters including the extent of open defecation, solid waste management, sewage management, waste water treatment, drinking water quality and mortality due to water born diseases. Damoh (Madhya Pradesh) came at the bottom of 476, preceded by Bhind(MP), Palwal and Bhiwani, both in Haryana.
