RTI petition reveals excess fare collection by MTC
The department mints an additional Rs 10 crore per annum by collecting excess fare on the said routes, Jagadeeshwaram claimed.
Chennai: It appears the MTC has been collecting a few extra bucks from passengers on Chennai-Tiruttani and Koyambedu- Poonamallee routes.
A series of RTI petitions filed by the Tamil Nadu unit of Lok Satta Party (LSP) pointed to alleged anomalies in computation of bus fare and collection of excess money from the traveling public on the routes.
D. Jagadeeshwaran, spokesperson of LSP, accused MTC of operating ordinary buses as express services and thereby collecting excess fare. The replies given by the national highway department and TN State Transport Corporation (Villupuram) showed the distance from Sriperumbudur to Poonamallee, Kanchipuram and Chengalpet as being different. The distance showed by TNSTC was high and accordingly higher fare, he told media persons after circulating the copies of the replies here on Saturday.
Likewise, replying to a petition filed by one P.Senthilkumar of Ayyappanthangal, the Villupuram division of TNSTC admitted in February 2013 that no ordinary services were operated on Tiruttani – Chennai route then. This was contrary to an earlier government order, Jagadeeshwaran told this paper.
Also, if a temporary fare revision is effected owing to diversion, as was done on Koyambedu-Poonamallee route via Maduravoyal owing to ongoing metro rail work, for over 10 days, a separate GO should be issued, but nothing was done.
The department mints an additional Rs 10 crore per annum by collecting excess fare on the said routes, Jagadeeshwaram claimed.
