Nitish Kumar, Narendra Modi in Bihar Governor row
New Delhi: The government has landed itself in a fresh controversy over the appointment of senior BJP leader Ram Nath Kovind as the new governor of poll-bound Bihar. The move comes months ahead of the crucial Assembly elections in the state.
Stoking a fresh controversy, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar voiced his displeasure over the appointment, saying he was not consulted and he got the information through media. The development comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Gaya in Bihar on Sunday.
On Saturday, President Pranab Mukherjee appointed Mr Kovind as the governor of Bihar and Acharya Dev Vrat as the governor of Himachal Pradesh. Mr Kovind had earlier served as the BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha chief.
A lawyer by profession, Mr Kovind, who hails from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, has also been a two-time Rajya Sabha member between 1994 and 2006. Hours after the appointment, Mr Nitish Kumar voiced his displeasure.
