Man held for Rs 37 lakh railway job fraud

A police team recovered several documents from the apartment on the money collected by him

KOCHI: The north police arrested P. Shameem, a native of Parappa near Hosdurg taluk in Kasargod district on Friday night, for collecting nearly '37 lakh from several persons promising them jobs in Indian Railways. Shameem, who was residing in a flat in Kaloor with a woman identified as Anu, masqueraded as a footballer having connections with top sports personalities and collected the money, police said. Anu has absconded after his arrest.

The police swung into action on a complaint registered by a native of Kottarakakara that she had been cheated of Rs 13,00,000 by the accused. A probe revealed that he had amassed Rs 37 lakh by posing as Vigilance officer in the railways.

He had appeared as a guest player for some football teams in the city. A police team recovered several documents from the apartment on the money collected by him.

A fake appointment letter of Southern Railway Recruitment Board was also recovered. Several persons were approaching the police following his arrest. Shameem was presented before a court on Saturday which remanded him in judicial custody.
