Watch: What happens to your body when you stop eating?
Six hours without food is reason enough for you to go ‘hangry’
Ever wondered what would happen to your body if you just stopped eating altogether? Well, Mitchell Moffit, the co-creator of ASAPScience, tries to explain that in an easy way in his fun new video.
During the first six hours, the body functions normally by breaking down the glycogen - this stores energy in your body- into glucose that cells use as fuel. Interestingly, around 25% of energy is used for your brain alone and the rest goes muscle tissues and red blood cells. However, after six hours this mode of energy production stops as glycogen is used up, which makes you go hungry or even 'hangry' - hungry and angry because of not eating anything for more than six hours.
What happens next is not pretty. Miffit goes on to talk about how the brain will start breaking down your body's own protein, which actually means that "your body is cannibalizing itself by destroying your muscle mass."
