Old play, upgraded
What happens when death is capitalised for political gain? City-based theatre group Samahaara tried to project just that through an adaptation of Sharad Joshi’s play, Ek Tha Gadha.
Directed by Nagaraju Pejjai, the satirical play reflected on capital punishment for political gain. The play revolved around the death of a donkey named Aladat Khan and the politics around its death.
Ratnashekhar Reddy, the producer of the play said, “The play was the end result of a workshop held by Samahaara and seven out of eight performers made their stage-debut with this play.”
In the adapted play, the nawab has a Facebook account and those who do not “like” his profile photo are deemed as traitors. “Parts of the play were edited to confine it to a 50-minute production,” he added. Actor Sai Kiran who aims to go abroad to study dramatics, said, “We had immense freedom to come up with our interpretation of the characters we played.”
