BBMP poll: Congress battles foes within
Bengaluru: Trust leaders of Congress to arrive at a consensus on selection of candidates for forthcoming polls to BBMP!
Serious differences surfaced among leaders on Friday with those who lost Assembly elections held in 2013 opposing the candidature of those who were elected to the corporation council five years ago. Reason: these unsuccessful contestants are of the opinion that they did not get adequate support from party corporators during the Assembly polls.
In another significant move, many party legislators favoured candidates with dubious track records.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, a senior leader who participated in a meeting of the steering committee for selection of candidates observed that many of their colleagues were trying to scuttle the chances of "winning candidates".
"There are at least 30-40 candidates who are seen as potential winners, but they have lost confidence of their leaders in one or other manner," the admitted adding in Mahalakshmi Layout Assembly segment, former MLA N. L. Narendra Babu has been doing his best to scuttle the chances of former corporators M. Nagaraj and Keshava Murthy.
“Similarly, Pulikeshi Nagar, C. V. Raman Nagar constituencies too have witnessed similar efforts being made by respective former MLAs,” the leader said explaining the situation.
The leader said some colleagues have been trying their best to scuttle the chances of those with a clean image and prevent them from entering the fray.
“Their only aim is to promote people with a shady past only to protect their own interests. If a ticket is given to such shady characters, they are aware that such characters will never pose any threat to them. We are certain that the final list for the polls will contain no less than a dozen such characters,” the leader contended.
