Tiger didn’t call Memons, says Maharashtra government

Reports said Tiger Memon called his mother and talked of revenge

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has outrightly rejected the reports of Tiger Memon, mastermind and absconding accused in Mumbai 1993 bomb blast case, having spoken to his family on phone hours before Yakub Memon’s hanging.

The government said that no call was made by Tiger in all these days and thus any such intercepted call recording cannot exist. K.P. Bakshi, additional chief secretary for home told this newspaper that they have not received any inputs from intelligence agencies pertaining to Mumbai. He, however, added that Maharashtra has been on high alert before the execution of Yakub.

An English daily on Friday claimed that Tiger rang up the Memon household at the Al-Husseini building at Mahim on the landline number one-and-a half hours before his younger brother Yakub was to be hanged. A Mumbai police wing monitoring the number even recorded the conversation between the fugitive mastermind and his mother in the early hours of July 30 and the newspaper also has the transcript.

According to the alleged transcript, Tiger was talking about taking revenge in the conversation with his mother Hanifa and another family member.

But the additional chief secretary has clarified that no such conversation has occurred between any of the family member and Tiger Memon. “The report is completely false as there was no conversation happened between the accused and the family members. If there was no such conversation then how come call recording and its transcript can exist,” Mr Bakshi said.

The additional chief secretary also said that there is no specific input from intelligence agencies related to Mumbai, who have been targeting terrorist organisations constantly. Further, he added that Maharashtra has been on alert before the execution of Yakub, who was hanged to death on July 30.

According to the sources, national security advisor Ajit Doval has even met Mr Bakshi twice in the last fortnight but the latter refused the same. He said, “Yes, a meeting was held but between Mr Doval and Sanjeev Dayal, director general of police (DGP).”
