Chennai: Over 1,500 Tasmac shops may be shut

Chennai: In the wake of widespread anti-liquor protests, 1,500 liquor shops are likely to be closed and the list has been prepared by Tasmac authorities. A final report will soon be submitted to the state. The Chief Minister is likely to announce a phased closure of these either as part of Independence Day celebrations on August 15 or orders are likely to be released during the Assembly session scheduled later this month.
Authorities have drawn up a list of shops located close to places of worship, educational institutions facing the wrath of public and outlets facing objections by building owners are also under scanner, highly placed Tasmac sources told DC. Recently a survey on various parameters like shops that are objected to, outlets with poor sales and those located near bus stand, market areas were studied.
In Tier one cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchi and Salem, shops that are recording daily sales of less than Rs 75,000 are to be closed. And in case of municipal areas outlets recording sales less than Rs 50,000 per day are also under scanner.
