Kochi Corporation unhappy over KMRL’s plans for city

Both the opposition and ruling members raised the issue during the council meeting

KOCHI: The City Corporation has expressed dissent over the announcement of the city modernisation and development projects by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL).

Replying to a debate during the council meeting on Friday, Mayor Tony Chammany said that a dissent note would be sent to the KMRL chief for making such announcements without consulting the civic body.

“Though other agencies can take up development projects in the city, it is the local body’s prerogative to take policy decisions regarding town planning projects. Even the state government has no right to take decisions on such projects. There have been media reports on the KMRL’s announcement on the urban rejuvenation package to revamp MG Road. No other agency can implement such schemes without the consent of the corporation council,” the Mayor said.

Both the opposition and ruling members raised the issue during the council meeting.

Rs 75K for mosquito eradication drive

While replying to the debate on the unabated mosquito menace, Mr. Chammany said that cleaning of drains and canals would begin by Onam.

Rs 75, 000 would be provided to each division for mosquito eradication activities.

The council meeting also passed a resolution for handing over the Thammanam – Pullepady road development to the Public Works Department.

Opposing the resolution, CPM councillors alleged that the project was already handed over to the PWD through a resolution last year and the new move was only an election stunt.

The councillors also asked the Mayor to intensify the stray dog sterilization programme as the number of strays and dog bite cases was on the increase.
