GHMC seeks Aadhaar, voter ID for complaints, draws ire

Citizens allege that this is to deter complainants

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation asking for copies of Aadhaar cards and voter’s IDs from citizens lodging complaints has not gone down well with many.

Citizens allege that this is to deter complainants. “Why should we submit a document that reveals our complete identity? Even if a complaint is lodged by a welfare association, there is no need to give the Corporation even the contact number,” they say.

GHMC, meanwhile, states that they are trying to speed up the Aadhaar card and voter ID linking process and when produced, the linking can be done immediately for the complainant.

Mr Ashwin Kumar, a resident of Shanthinagar, Masab Tank said, “We visited the GHMC Central zone office on August 5 to complain regarding the severe encroachments in the colony pedestrian footpaths and increasing traffic in lanes; as per Supreme Court orders, the GHMC has to remove such encroachments. Not just me but the whole colony has signed on the representation… but the staff of citizen centre of GHMC said that a complaint would not accepted unless a photocopy of Aadhar card and voter Id is submitted.”

“Around 50 per cent of the complaints are for illegal construction, deviation and encroachments where the complainant does not want to reveal his/her identity,” said M. Srinivas, also from Masab Tank.

GHMC commissioner Somesh Kumar said, “The Aadhaar card seeding will be held on August 8 at 7,051 polling booths for those who have been left out.”
