Jaya presents 21-page memorandum to Modi during luncheon meet
Chennai: Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa stood alongside Governor K. Rosaiah to receive Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a bouquet on his arrival at the Chennai airport here on Friday.
The bonhomie between the leaders was well received by AIADMK and BJP cadres, as this was the first time that Modi was visiting the Chief Minister after becoming Prime Minister.
Earlier, the Prime Minister launched the National Handloom Day celebrations at the University of Madras and then drove straight to the Chief Minister’s Poes Garden residence The two had a one-on-one meeting followed by lunch. Jayalalithaa presented a detailed memorandum to Modi during their 50-minute luncheon meet.
In the 21-page memorandum, Jayalalithaa demanded formation of the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee for implementation of Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal’s final order:
She also requested the PM to intervene and advise neighbouring Karnataka not to proceed with the Mekadatu project without Tamil Nadu’s concurrence, and to deploy CISF personnel at Mullaiperiyar dam.
She sought funds for completing major projects in the state like interlinking of peninsular rivers, metro rail second phase and Cheyyur power project.
The memorandum also said the Centre should protect the traditional fishing rights of Indian fishermen in Palk Bay and hold talks with Sri Lankan government to prevent attacks on TN fishermen.
She also said the Prevention of Cruelty Against Animals Act should be amended to permit jallikattu again and Tamil should be declared Madras high court’s official language .
