Youngster was picked up by the Meerpet police in a cellphone theft case
Hyderabad: A youngster picked up by the Meerpet police in a cellphone theft case has been admitted at a private hospital after he allegedly consumed acid while in custody. N. Shiva Kumar was picked by the cops on July 31. His parents and relatives said that doctors at Aware Global had had said that his chances of survival were 50 per cent as the acid had damaged his food pipe.
“My son had suffered injuries from a stove blast and was recovering. It was after nearly a month that he had gone out to meet friends when the police picked him up,” said N. Shankar.
They alleged that they weren’t informed about the “acid drinking” incident and the follow up till the following day.
“After admitting my son at Aware Global in LB Nagar, the police took away the prescription and papers of Om Sai hospital where he was treated for burns,” Mr Shankar said.
The parents have approached the State Human Rights Commission stating that he had been wrongly picked up and harassed.
“First they said he got a seizure, then they said he drank acid and was admitted to Global. When we asked them how acid was available to a person in custody, they started placating us, assuring cancellation of the case and a job for my son,” said a N. Yadamma, his mother.
“Shiva Kumar got the bottle of acid from the bathroom. We immediately took him to the hospital. We are conducting an inquiry and will look into the allegations,” said Meerpet inspector G. Biksham Reddy.
