Police arrested four persons who were named in his suicide note
Chennai: A 45-year-old man attempted suicide by immolation at the seven wells police station on Thursday evening after delayed action by the cops over an allegation of torture by loan sharks. Puzhal resident Shah Jahan, a two-wheeler mechanic was rescued by the sentry there and moved to the Kilpauk Medical college hospital (KMCH) where he succumbed to his burn injuries on Friday morning.
Police arrested four persons who were named in his suicide note and remanded them to judicial custody. A resident of Puzhal, Shah Jahan runs a mechanic shop in seven wells. A few months ago, he took a loan of Rs 1.3 lakh from four individuals who lent him on high interest rates.
As time went by, Shah Jahan found it difficult to repay the interest rates after which he approached the Red Hills police station with a complaint alleging torture by the four usurers. However, since the action was delayed, a dejected Shah Jahan reached the seven wells police station on Thursday evening when most of the station strength was away on the PM’s visit security-related work. “Before the constables there could prevent him, the man who came to the station with Kerosene poured it on him, set himself on fire around 6.30 pm,” said a police officer.
Police and locals put off the fire and moved him to the KMCH around 8 pm with more than 70 per cent burn injuries. Shah Jahan breathed his last around 8.20 am on Friday, after which Seven Wells police swung into action and arrested the four loan sharks — Mohana Krishnan, Gunasekaran, Lalith Kumar, and Kamalesh.
Police said that he had also sent a detailed account to a relative about the tortures he faced from the quartet. “One among them, Gunasekaran, had called up Shah Jahan three days ago and threatened him of dire consequences if he did not repay the loan,” an officer said.
