Phishing rampant despite warnings
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Despite frequent alerts from banks, online fraudsters continue to cash in on the ignorance of customers.
A city-based youth lost Rs 9,999 after he passed on the details of his ATM card to a fraudster who posed as a bank official. The bank officials are hopeful of recovering the money as the customer alerted the bank without delay.
Anandagopan, a channel cameraman, got a call on his mobile on Tuesday afternoon from a ‘bank official’ saying that he wanted some details like account number, ATM card number and even the security code on the rear side of the card to activate internet banking on Anandagopan's account with the State Bank of India, civil station branch here. “The caller sounded genuine and I gave him the details,” said the victim.
Once Anandagopan called back, a woman who attended the call, spoke in an unfamiliar manner. Subsequent calls remained unanswered.
Anandagopan checked his bank account at an ATM counter and found that Rs 9,999 was debited. Since he was busy with official assignments, his father reported the matter at SBI Civil Station branch here. A bank official said, “we hope to recover the money as the transaction was not yet complete.”
