Ensure supply of drinking water to public: S P Velumani
Velumani inspects Mylapore-Nandanam drinking water distribution station
CHENNAI: With widespread complaints of drinking water shortage, municipal administration minister S.P. Velumani on Thursday inspected the Mylapore-Nandanam Drinking Water Distribution Station at MRC Nagar and directed officials to act on complaints received from the public immediately.
He also scrutinised the distribution of water through tanker lorries to those areas which did not have piped supply. An official release said that the minister instructed officials to ensure timely and adequate supply of water to the public and also to increase the number of trips if there is higher requirement. He was accompanied by Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board managing director B. Chandra Mohan.
The MRC Nagar distribution station received 50 million litres of drinking water on alternative days from Nemmeli desalination plant. On alternate days, 45MLD of water from this station would be distributed through pipeline to Triplicane, Royapettah, Ice House, Mylapore, Nandanam, Mandaveli and Raja Annamalaipuram from 3 am to 9 am. For areas without piped water supply, 10 tanker lorries with capacity of 6000 to 9000 litres would make 100 to 110 trips to distribute 1.5 MLD.
However, residents of Alwarpet complain of inadequate supply. “The quantity supplied by metro water has been reduced drastically over the past weeks,” said S. Narayanan, a resident of First cross street, TTK road, Alwarpet. Till June, he said, the locality used to get daily supply. “Now the supply is being done only on alternate days and quantum also been reduced. ” He said that with the reduction in supply of drinking water, they were forced to purchase water from metro water tanker lorries. “Even for the paid supply of water through tankers, we have to wait for a minimum of three days from the date of registration,” he lamented.
