British trekkers trapped in Ladakh flash floods rescued by J&K police

The group had 23 British citizens including 21 female students and eight local guides

Srinagar: A group of 31 British nationals and their local hosts and guides who were trapped in hills outside Ladakh’s main town Leh in the aftermath of recent flash floods triggered by a series of cloudbursts has been rescued by Jammu and Kashmir police.

The group which included 23 British citizens including 21 female students and eight local guides and helpers was stuck in an area called Markha-Sko where it had gone on August 2 for trekking.

On August 5, the area was hit by flash floods and on receiving information about the plight of the group a police team from Leh headed by Head-Constable Muhammad Isa and another from the State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) rushed to the area.

Officials said that the police party reached the area with rations after twelve hours of journey by foot. “The group was safely rescued with the help of helicopter and was shifted to Moonline Guest House in Leh,” a statement issued by the police here on Friday added.
