Watch: What not to say to your Bengali friend
Hilarious video that makes clear of many of the pet peeves of Bengalis
One of the quickest ways to get a Bengali to hate you is by just saying "Ami tomake bhalobashi" at the very first meeting. They’ll be gunning for you then. Just kidding, not really. India has a rich heritage of multiple languages, lifestyles and traditions, which makes it one of most culturally diverse countries in the world. Yet, people will almost always never stop caricaturing and stereotyping people. And that is NOT cool, seriously.
So, if you are a non-Bengali who wants to keep their Bengali pal sweet in case you want them to share with you some of their homemade maachch bhaat (fish and rice)…or just avoid feeding you to the sharks, you could start off by not calling them “Babu moshai".
And yeah, we forgot to say something important. Not all Bengalis love to eat maachch bhaat. Or are intellectuals well-versed with Rabindra Sangeet and/or know how to sing or play a musical instrument or are communists. Just because you managed to say “roshogolla” somewhat right that doesn’t mean that names like Abhishek or Abhijeet are pronounced the same way.
To know more about how to avoid being a ignorant jerk to your Bengali friends check out this video by Being Indian aptly called the “Things Bengalis are Tired of Hearing”. Doing so might just save you from getting tossed overboard the Howrah Bridge.
