Employees fear threat to their lives
Chennai: With pressure mounting from all sides to introduce prohibition, Tasmac has recorded a total loss of Rs 12 crore due to dip in sales and damage to 10 shops across the state in the last one week.
The company also lost one of its employees, Selvam, working in an outlet at Salem. He died on Tuesday due to alleged suffocation after miscreants hurled petrol bombs into a closed shop.
Tasmac officials said the daily sales of liquor is between Rs 60 and 65 crore and during weekends it goes up to Rs 90 to 100 crore. But, protests and closure of shops took a heavy toll on sales, which reduced by two to five per cent.
Shops in Kalingapatti, Madurai, Salem, Karur, Namakkal and Chennai have recorded low sales, sources added. Meanwhile Tasmac employees on Wednesday demanded adequate protection for them to run the outlets. Employees’ feared threat to their lives following attacks on liquor outlets.
The government should not force employees to remain inside the shops after working hours. Police should be deployed to guard the shops, said D. Dhanasekar, general secretary, Tamil Nadu Tasmac employees association (AITUC). Condemning the assault on employees, he demanded compensation for Selvam’s family. Selvam died on duty and the government should provide compensation to the family, said S. Radha, Selvam’s wife.
