Suspensions in Lok Sabha see BJP rift
New Delhi: The move to isolate the Congress by suspending its 25 MPs not merely boomeranged, but also seems to have drove a wedge within the BJP. Actor-MP Shatrughan Sinha on Wednesday voiced unhappiness at the suspension of the Congress Lok Sabha members by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.
Another BJP MP Hukum Singh said it was “not a happy situation” in the Lok Sabha with several seats lying vacant. While Mr Sinha went on record, many other MPs and party leaders were quietly expressing disapproval of the move to suspend Congress MPs for five days. Off the record, they said this “politically immature move only revived the Congress and united the entire opposition”.
Sources said some BJP MPs had conveyed their concern to their seniors as they feel other opposition parties, that had started feeling Parliament should be allowed to function, were now supporting the Congress in its protests against the suspension of its MPs. The Congress MPs were suspended on Monday for “wilfully obstructing the business of the House” by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.
