People wait in one-km-long queue for subsidised onions

Onions were sold at a subsidised price of Rs 20 a kg in 86 centres
Hyderabad: A one-km long queued was witnessed at Rythu Bazaar at Saroornagar in Hyderabad on Wednesday. The queue was not for the darshan of Lord Balaji or to get a glimpse of a film star, but it was buy subsidised onions provided by the Telangana government.
The government on Wednesday began the sale of onions for a subsidised price of Rs 20 a kg in 86 centres across the state including 46 in Hyderabad. At present, its market price is bet-ween Rs 45 and Rs 50 per kg.
Each family can get a maximum of two kg on production of any identity card. “The identity card was made mandatory to prevent hoteliers and other commercial establishments buying subsidised onions,” T Harish Rao, minister for marketing and irrigation said, after opening the onion sale centre at Saroornagar. He, however, requested people not resort to panic buying as the government is making all efforts to provide sufficient quantity of onions to the people.
