Karnataka college students donate Rs 10,000 to Yakub Memon's executioner
Mangaluru: In a unique gesture, students of a pre-university college in Puttur donated Rs 10,000 to the executioner who hanged Mumbai blast convict Yakub Memon recently.
The students of Ambika Padavi Poorva Vidyalaya in Puttur pooled Rs 10,000 and sent a cheque to the Maharashtra Director General of Police on Monday. “Student leaders of the College wanted to honour the executioner for hanging Yakub Memon - the person accused in the Mumbai blast case. They wanted to send some money. The student representatives contacted us for permission to pool funds. Looking at their enthusiasm we permitted them,” Subrahmanya Nattoja of the college told Deccan Chronicle.
“Student leaders visited every class and asked the students if they would volunter to contribute. They succeeded in collecting about Rs 9,000. College staff too contributed to make it Rs 10,000. The cheque was sent by post to the Maharashtra DGP on Monday,” he said.
The student council leaders have sent a small covering letter to the Maharashtra police chief along with the cheque.
“We would like to expresss our respect to the officials who played a great role in this. We are so proud to say that we will be greatful to you if you give us an opportunity to uphold our patriotism,” the covering letter signed by the students states.
