Indiranagar blighted by garbage pile-ups
BENGALURU: Indiranagar and Thippasandra areas, which come under Jeevanbhimanagar and New Thippasandra, may have beautiful parks, lush greenery, and plentiful water supply, but clogged drains and piles of garbage are a perennial problem here.
K. Divakar, an advocate residing at Thippasandra, complained that during the monsoon, roads were getting waterlogged after even a small amount of rain and turning into mud pools. Sometimes, even the sewers overflow, emanating an unbearable stench, he said.
The roads have developed crater-like potholes. On July 21, the Thippasandra main road and 6th main road turned into a pool of sewage water. At least five motorists had mishaps, unable to negotiate the potholes which were filled with storm water. Repeated complaints to the BBMP have fallen on deaf ears.
Invariably, drains overflow during monsoon as the drains have not been desilted for years now. When the residents of Thippasandra and Indiranagar lodged complaints with BBMP, the authorities claimed that tenders have been floated for desilting.
Since roads are narrow in Thippasandra, the overflowing drains lead to traffic chaos in the area. Wider roads, a traffic- free ride and better civic amenities have become a mirage in the area. Although Indiranagar has better roads and parks, indiscriminate garbage disposal is the major issue haunting the residents, said Patrick Raj, a resident of Michael Palya.
Empty plots and road corners silently turn into dumping grounds. These areas also become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Hospitals in the surrounding area are seeing an increased number of dengue and chikun gunya cases.
The unhygienic conditions are a health hazard for residents. Repeated pleas to the BBMP authorities have fallen on deaf ears, said Mr. Raj.
