Guntur: Ragging costs 1 more girl her life

Sunita had filmed college ragging scene on cellphone

Guntur: A B. Tech final year student on Wednesday jumped to her death from her college building, unable to bear alleged harassment at the hands of the college management and students after she tried to end the menace of ragging.

The incident comes just days after the ragging suicide of Rishiteshwari at ANU, Guntur. The family of Narne Sunitha, 22, a student of Malineni Lakshmaiah Women’s Engineering College at Pulladigunta of Vatticherukuru mandal near Guntur, received the news of her death from the college management.

Sunitha’s mother Anjamma, along with her brother E. Srinivas rushed to the college only to learn that the body had been shifted to the GGH, Guntur. Mr Srinivas told reporters at the hospital that a few days ago, Swarupa, the hostel warden had snatched Sunitha’s phone from her while campus in-charge Sambasiva Rao had punished the student for levelling allegations that ragging was going on unchecked in the college.

He said Sunitha had witnessed a ragging incident and had filmed it on her mobile. Thereafter, she had lodged a complaint with the principal. This infuriated the warden and hostel in-charge who snatched away her phone. “After this, they started harassing her, forcing her to commit suicide,” he said. Sunitha’s collegemates, who had come to the GGH, said on condition of anonymity that she had tried to stop ragging on the college premises.

“The college management and faculty countered Sunitha’s efforts by levelling allegations against her that she herself was involved in ragging,” the students said.

They said that Sunitha was harassed by the college management, warden, hostel in-charge and faculty. The students said that six B.Tech second year students had ragged first year students and Sunitha had objected to this.

They demanded strict action against the guilty for failing to curb the menace. Meanwhile, Vatticherukuru sub-inspector P. Premayya said that till the evening, no complaint was formally lodged regarding the girl’s death.
