Microsoft rolls out free upgrades for Windows 10 to India

Users waiting for the free upgrade have started receiving the Windows 10 update

Make sure you have a strong internet bandwidth—Microsoft has released the Windows 10 update for registered users in India. Windows 10 was launched late last month and Microsoft had announced a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8 users.

Microsoft had announced that users who had a copy of registered Windows 7 and Windows 8 are applicable for a free upgrade to the latest operating system, Windows 10. Those who had registered for the fee upgrade would have seen a Windows 10 icon in the notification bar, waiting for the release to roll out the Microsoft gates. After Microsoft announced the launch of Windows 10, around 14 million users had already installed and upgraded to Windows 10. A week after the announcement, users in India were still to get the update, but now the upgrades are finally here.

Since late last night, users have been reporting that their Windows 10 update was here. The requirement for Windows 10 was a licensed Windows 7 or a Windows 8 operating system and all the important updates for the current OS needed to be installed. If you want to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, make sure you have all the Windows updates installed for your existing operating system.

Microsoft Windows 10 requires a huge amount of data that needs to be downloaded in order to upgrade the current operating system. The installation files amount to more than 2.7GB and you better make sure that you have an unlimited broadband connection with a good speed. On a 50Mb/s bandwidth, it took us around 25 minutes to download the files. Upgrading to Windows 10, thereafter, takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, and will depend on your computer’s hardware configuration.

For those who would like to download the operating system and install it some other time, you would need to download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft. This utility will download Windows 10 and create an ISO file to burn to a DVD later or create a USB bootable installation drive on the fly. Make sure you have an 8GB flash drive ready if you want to create a USB bootable installation drive.
