Chennai: The Special Protection Group, the elite force in charge of Prime Minister’s security, on Tuesday ordered stopping of metro rail work on GST Road on Thursday and Friday in view of the scheduled visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the city on August 7 to launch the national handloom day.
The SPG team headed by an officer in the rank of deputy inspector general asked authorities to stop work on the elevated structure on GST Road between Alandur and airport for two days at an advanced security liaisoning meeting, sources said.
Senior officials from Chennai police and VIP security also participated in the meeting with SPG officials and CISF team, which is in charge of security of the airport.
A four-member SPG team headed by DIG arrived on Tuesday while a larger contingent of SPG squad had reached Chennai a day earlier after it finished their work at Rameswaram where Modi went to participate in the funeral of former President Abdul Kalam.

Prime Minister Modi is expected to land here at 11 am on Friday and return by 2 pm the same day after attending a function. He will use GST Road to reach the venue at Madras university

It may be recalled that only in June, an IT HR consultant on a two-wheeler died, after a piece of scaffolding from the elevated Metro Rail construction site fell on him. “Not only the possibility of such an accident, the SPG feels that presence of unchecked people on top of an elevated structure could be a security risk for PM,” sources said while disclosing the decision to stop the construction activities on metro rail site. Security at the airport will be also beefed up.
