Calicut University plan for ayurveda research centre stirs row

Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College principal Dr K.G. Vishwanath said that he had no idea what the Calicut University was up- to

KOZHIKODE: In a controversial move, a three-member inspection committee of Calicut University has recommended research centre status for Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College, Ollur, which is under the Kerala University of Health Sciences.

KUHS Vice-Chancellor Dr M.K.C Nair said that the move was against the rules as the Calicut University cannot send an inspection team to start a research centre in an institution under another university.

The inspection team, which prepared the report last month, recommended granting recognition to the Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College as research centre of the University of Calicut under the faculty of ayurveda. However, the university has not informed the KUHS about the move.

“As far as I know, the college is under our control and other universities cannot start such centres. I don’t know under what circumstances they took such a decision,” said Dr M.K.C Nair.

Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College principal Dr K.G. Vishwanath said that he had no idea what the Calicut University was up- to.

“According to KUHS Act-2010 and the connected Calicut University rule, the college is under KUHS and the last batch that was under Calicut University has also passed out. If someone suspects foul play, we cannot dismiss it,” he said.

CU research director Dr Sailas Benjamin said the decision was taken after extensive discussions in the academic council and the syndicate.

“There is nothing wrong in granting research centre status,” says syndicate member and one of the inspection team members Dr K.M. Naseer.

Top sources from the CU said that the decision could be reviewed due to suspicion of foul play.
