Watch: Chimps are confused seeing themselves in the mirror for the first time

Chimpanzees of the Ecuadorian Nyonie forest reacted in a variety of amusing ways when looking at their reflections in mirrors for the first time. According to The Daily Mail, wildlife researchers Anne-Marie and Xavier Hubert-Brierre had set up the mirrors in order to observe the reactions of animals when they saw their own reflections for the first time.

The secretly installed motion-triggered cameras caught a group of chimps, whose reactions ranging from aggressive displays of strength to a hilarious attempt at a dance-off, left the researchers astonished. In the video, the chimpanzees are seen believing that their own reflections in the mirror were rivals and start getting territorial in no time. They try scaring away their reflections by limb flailing, feet stomping, punching the mirror with their fists and even dragging in tree branches.

When none of that works, the chimpanzees take the fight to another level by showing off some hilarious dance moves to gain the upper hand. Watching the apes groove to prove will surely have you fall off your chair laughing.
