Thomson sets up plant, Sony plans India-made TV, Adani to invest $5b

Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Make-in-India campaign appears to have convinced electronics companies to manufacture their products in India.

On Tuesday, Japanese electronics giant Sony and American consumer durable brand Thomson owner Technicolor have announced their plans to locally manufacture their products — to be more precise Chennai and Hyderabad respectively.

According to a media report, Sony Corporation has tied up with Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn to manufacture its Bravia line of televisions at the latter’s factory near Chennai.

The report quoting Sony India managing director Kenichiro Hibi had said that the company could also evaluate making smartphones in India itself.

In Hyderabad, American consumer durables company Technicolor Group has has announced the re-launch of its popular bra-nd Thomson in the Indian market in partnership with its local Hyderabad-based OEM partner Resolute Electronics India.

Speaking this newspaper, Resolute CEO A. Gopal Krishna said the company has got five-year licence from Technicolor to manufacture Thomson brand products, which include TVs and large appliances, in India.

The company is investing Rs 300 crore for the manufacturing plant, which could generate direct emp-loyment for 500 people. He said Thomson aims to capture five per cent market share in all segments in the next three years.

Explaining the rationale behind setting up the plant in Hyderabad, Mr Gopal Krishna said: “This city is strategically placed in the country and is equidistant to other major metros and it also has large pool of talented technicians and engineers.”

Meanwhile, Gujarat-based Adani Group is planning to enter into a joint venture with Foxconn to foray into electronics manufacturing with a total investment of $5 billion. The details are expected to be announced shortly.
