Thousands throng Hogenakkal for Aadi Perukku festival
Dharmapuri/Krishnagiri: The Dharmapuri district administration has made elaborate arrangements for the Aadi Perukku festival which attracts thousands of people to Hogenakkal. The district administration has announced a holiday for the festival. Special buses were also operated to facilitate people to travel. A cultural programme was also organised.
Coracle operators were asked not to ferry people beyond the permitted limit to avoid untoward incidents. In Krishnagiri, people celebrated the festival at K.R.P. dam in Krishnagiri and Kelavarapalli dam in Hosur.
The district information office have arranged for a photo exhibition at K.R.P. dam to highlight the government schemes and its achievements. The public were also given information on how and where to approach for availing benefits from the welfare scheme.
3 swept away by Cauvery river
Two persons, including a 19-year-old college student, were washed away while taking a dip in Cauvery river for Aadi Perukku festival at Mettur in Salem district on Monday.
Police said C. Navendan, 19, from Kanakkampatty near Nangavalli in Salem, who was studying second year B.Com at government arts college, had gone to take a dip in the river near Muniappan temple at around 5.30am, when he was washed away.
The public informed the fire and rescue personnel in Mettur. Following this, the rescue personnel along with local fishermen retrieved a body from the river. However, the body was later identified as L.Sambathkumar, 30, a labourer from Puthusampalli village in Karumalaikudal. Police suspect that he was also washed away while taking a similar dip in the river. Fire and rescue personnel are yet to trace the body of the college student.
In another incident a 26-year-old youth went missing in Cauvery river of Hogenakkal in Dharmapuri on Monday. Police said, P.Rajenderan, 26, of Yercaud in Salem district was taking bath at the prohibited Athimarathukadavu village, along the course of the river when he went missing.
