Shortage delays helmet rule in Visakhapatnam
Orders have been issued to the transport department to postpone enforcement of the helmet rule
Visakhapatnam: The Andhra Pradesh government has postponed enforcement of the compulsory helmet rule by another three months. Orders have been issued to the transport department to postpone enforcement of the helmet rule to November 1.
Earlier, the government had asked the transport department to enforce the rule regarding wearing of helmets for two-wheeler riders from August 1. AP Chief Secretary I.Y.R. Krishna Rao said on Monday that the government has decided to postpone enforcement of the helmet rule due to shortage of helmets and as sellers had jacked up the price of helmets substantially.
He said that some shops were selling helmets which do not meet government specifications. Mr Krishna Rao said the government had asked the transport department to publicise the names of companies who manufacture helmets that meet the specifications. Some people are buying helmets which do not meet the specifications and are incapable of protecting the motorists, he said. Mr Krishna Rao said the police will counsel two-wheeler riders if they are caught riding without helmets and that all riders must have helmets by November 1.
