Get ready to enjoy car-free Sundays

Egmore Halls Road becomes Tamil Salai
Chennai: It will be Tamil Salai at Egmore and not Halls Road hereafter. The Chennai Corporation council adopted a resolution to this effect. The decision to rename followed the announcement by the school education minister in the state assembly in 2013.
The renaming was due to the fact that the stretch housed the office of the Tamil Valarchi Iyakkam. Kolakaaranpettai in Royapettah, however, will wait a bit longer as official confirmation on a new name was yet to come. Names discussed to replace Kolakaaranpettai, include Kallukaaranpettai or Agathiyar, Gandhi Adigal, Paavendar, Kabilar, Ovvaiyaar, Angavai, Sangavai and Jayalalithaa street among others. Besides, the council has also sent representation to
the government requesting a change of name for Gandhi Nagar fourth main road in Adyar zone to Pa. Ramachandra Adithanar Salai.
As reported by DC earlier, the council also approved the launch of Carfree Sunday programme, Namma Chennai Namakke, promoted by ITDP. In the light of Coimbatore Municipality announcing August 9 as Carfree Sunday under ‘Coimbatore Happy Streets’ moniker, the Chennai Corporation too has made its move.
“To promote street culture, every Sunday, the support of traffic police, important roads and streets will be closed for vehicles for a few hours,” the resolution said. Meanwhile, the corporation will also call for bids through e-auction for collecting parking fees from its 93 parking spots, after TEXCO, the TN ex-servicemen group bought itself out of its agreement with the civic body.
The traffic police have identified more parking spots in the city and has presented a list of the spots to the corporation, the resolution read.
