Drains overflow near railway station in Coimbatore
Coimbatore: Overflowing drains on the busy State Bank Road near the railway station have become a cause of concern for the public. On Monday, the sky opened up for just an hour in Coimbatore leading to overflowing of drains on that stretch. Adding to the woes, the overflowing sewage stagnated on the State Bank road causing severe inconvenience to road users.
The sewage was flowing down for up to one kilometer along this busy stretch. Rain on Sunday resulted in sewage flowing out of man-holes in the same locality. The rains have been exposing the city’s poor infrastructure and the civic body’s lack of preparedness.
“Overflowing of drains has been a recurring problem but the civic body has failed to take any concrete efforts to solve the issue. On days of rain, when sewage flows out, there has been a steady dip in number of customers to my eatery. I face a huge loss in business as public avoid stepping into shops as a stream of sewage flows in front,” lamented A.Ashraf Ali, a roadside biriyani vendor. When queried, corporation central zone chairman K.A. Adhinarayanan said efforts would be made to pump out the stagnant sewage on State Bank road.
“There was an overflow as the quantity of sewage has gone beyond the capacity of the drains. Using sewage cleaning trucks, the stagnant water will be sucked out on Monday night,” said K. A, Adhinarayanan. He has also written to the civic body to take up the process of reconstructing drainage canals. This will be a permanent solution to the issue, he said.
